Storm Ready: Apartment Prep for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June to November, and as an apartment dweller, your prep looks a bit different than a homeowner’s. You can’t board up windows, but you can be remarkably prepared.

First, know your flood zone. Even if your apartment didn't flood in 2016, heavy rain can turn parking lots into ponds. If a major storm is forecasted, move your car to higher ground or a parking garage. Inside your unit, create a "Go-Bag" that includes your important documents (lease, insurance policy, ID), three days of water, and a portable power bank for your phone.

Most importantly, communicate with your landlord. Ask about their protocol for debris removal and power outages. Having a digital inventory—photos of every room and electronic serial numbers—stored in the cloud will make any potential insurance claim 100% easier.
